  • History of Gomega

Kanoa Kukaua (Lead Vocal & Guitar), Stacey Elaban (Drums & Backup Vocal), Ian Horniman (Bass Guitar), Dani-Girl Waring (Vocals) and Ipo Kahele (Band Manager) started Gomega in 2001 but their first gig was sometime in Dec of 2000 for Haleakala and Foremost Dairies X-mas Party.

Shortly after Dani- Girl lost interest in music and needed a break and Ian sadly left Gomega because he played with another band that was coming out with their first CD and Ian wanted to focus more on Khrinj's project. So with Gomega's blessing to Ian and Khrinj we moved forward to find another Bass Player. We didn't have to look far because Kanoa's childhood friend became Gomega's 2nd Bass Player that also did back up vocals Owen Sarsona. Soon we added Patrick Brown on Keys and this was Gomega at the end of 2001.

Soon Kanoa met this young boy about 14 or 15 years old. That would change him in so many ways. This young mans name is Cody Matasuda. Not knowing at that time (2001 or 2002) what an important role Cody would play in the future of Gomega. Cody started out as the back up Keyboard play, Bass Player, Drummer, and an extra Guitar Palyer if needed.

Mean while Gomega came out with their first CD in Feb 2002 after returning from a gig in Florida. Gomega Fest was born. That was Gomega's way of having a CD release Party. Shortly after Patrick Brown left the band for personal reasons and Cody was in (for life). In July Owen left for money reason and Billy joined Gomega to Play Bass. Stacey agreed to stay with Gomega until the end of that summer and now Cody was playing Drums on some gigs. Kai Kachatorian and Hans Schopun (Khrinj's Drummer) fulled in for a while. During all this change we let Billy go and welcomed Shawn Michael. Soon after we had Joe Abraham play drums and this was an awesome mix and this was Gomega's line up till 2004.

Sad but true Joe planned to return to school in the mainland and left us at the end of summer 2004. But we know it was gonna happen and found Michael Burke to fill in as Joe left for college. In March of 2005 Cody moved to the mainland and that was a sad moment for Kanoa and Ipo.

It's 2007 and Gomega has overcome alot just like many bands do but we are still here and making a difference. Gomega is Maui Most Versitile Band and dosen't conform to what is in but to what Gomega likes and to educate local people about music, their is more to music then reggae. Music=Life=Gomega

3/01/2008 Gomega still Day 2 on Oahu

    By gomegamusic | June 12, 2008

So after a long day of filming with the Baraquios we decided to go Ice Skating (while Ipo got tired of listening to Cody wine to go to Ice Places). The only people that went skating was Jen, Mai, and Cody. Ipo believes it was a set up….???? Anyways Kanoa, Ipo, Mike, and House just drank hot coco and ate popcorn and later went outside to play hacky sack. What fun…..!!!!

After that we went back to the house to get ready to go to Tropic to play a set. It was fun and it was over….!!!!

    2/10/2008 A Day on Maui

    By gomegamusic | June 12, 2008

Ok this was a day to go down in Gomega’s book of WOW! So after an already long weekend we we’re suppose to open for Alpha Blondie at the MACC with Okla Da Moc but due to illness in Kona Alpha Blondie couldn’t make it to Maui. So that so sucked but we would rather Alpha Blondie get better so that he could one day return to Maui.

So we ended up going to Las Pinatas in Kahului to eat and then we all decided to go to the beach in Kihei. So off we went to Side Walks in Kihei. Wow choke white peeps down there. Kind of felt off being the only brown peeps down there but was all good. We had fun.

After the beach we went home to rest and after that headed over to Castle Big Fun to drink, play rock band, and cruz before heading to Tiki’s to watch Kanoa play.

If you want to know what else happen after this check out www.kanoaofgomega.com for the rest of the night.

    GOMEGA’S Main Goal

    By kokonegirl | April 1, 2008

    To Our Band Members:

This is for who ever has lost sight of what Gomega’s goals are in music!

When Kanoa and Ipo started Gomega their were no rules. Their were goals of what we:

    DIDN’T want to do:

    1. SELL OUT! We wanted to make music that we wanted to make and not conform to what others bands were doing to just sell CD’s and make a name for them self. Staying true to our MUSIC and being a part of the culture of music. Staying on the humble path of success and not choosing the path everyone else wants us too.
    2. BE STALE! Always being as fresh as we can from cover songs to music we make.
    3. HAVE EGO TRIPS! We want everyone in Gomega and our Dream Team to have input and not one person make all the decisions. Kanoa is the face and songwriter of Gomega but everyone in Gomega has a say from music creativity to SOME business decisions.
    4. TO NEVER FORGETING WHERE WE COME FROM! Always remembering who’ve helped us get where we will be or where we are. Never losing sight of our goals in music.

Thing we DID want to do:

    1. Make a different in the local music world!
    2.  If anyone played/s in Gomega we always tell them it’s NOT about the money it’s ALWAYS about the music first and if you don’t like it then Gomega isn’t for you! (meaning we could make/ charge a lot of money to play gigs like other bands or we can keep our prices fair so people can afford us. Do whatever community events that people ask for or sharing the stage with Big names and turn down the money cuz  we are happy to be asked and it’s an honor just to meet great talent in this business)
    3. Support the underground music on Maui and anywhere else.
    4. MAKE GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!! and have fun doing it with band members who believed in the music GOMEGA makes and plays!

Ipo’s Thoughts: Mixing Personal Relationships with Business Relationship

    By kokonegirl | April 1, 2008

Where do I began? It’s been a long few weeks of not knowing what was going on but now all is good in some departments. I feel like a lot of shit was lifted off my shoulders and I do have some great friends out there that help me though this Mahalo to Hekili, Joey, and Kristi.

Sometimes in this crazy world of the music business you met some great people but when you start crossing the road of developing a deeper friendship away from music all is good cuz it’s fresh and you start learning things about each other that deepings your friendship and is worth the bullshit and stress of learning about each other. Though out the years I have experience relationship like this just like a lot of people in this business.

When it comes to the personal relationship you have to trust in your friendship NO matter what! When you start taking thing from business and crossing it over to your personal relationship then you loss sight of what is what.

Couple weeks back I was told that my blog Frustrated caused me to be unprofessional and people who read it wouldn’t want to do business with our band, and in short I shouldn’t air out our dirty laundry and a lot of other things were said about my business tactics and I believe every one is welcome to their opinions. This web/blog page is for the good, bad, and the ugly things that go on in the world of Gomega and if our band members have lost sight of this you really need to check your self cuz in June 2008 it will be a year that our blog has been up.

I’m Ipo and what you see is what you get and if I have something to say I will say it and if others people out there feel as if it’s a personal attack then you should call me on it, if you call yourself my friend, you should ask. I never hide anything and if people know me and call me their friends they know that they can ask me and I will tell you. I’m 36 years old and I have NO time for people who question my friendship along with my business decisions.

To our Band members, Business Friends, and Personal Friends I’m moving on with or with out you, I’ve wasted enough time on this shit and I’m over these fucking games that are being played.

    St. Patrick’s Day @ LAB

    By cody | March 22, 2008

Happy belated St. Patricks Day to everyone.

So we had and awesome awesome AWESOME St. Patty’s Day show at Life’s a beach in kihei. I had a blast. The musical blend we had was fricken saweeet. Not just because everyone killed it and does an incredible job like always, but because we had the privilege of having Wolf on bass!!!

Now, i’ve heard alot about Wolf and his chops, but dude, he is the man! Everything was on point and just clicked. Kanoa was on guitar and DL4, Big Mike on drums, Wolf Man on bass, Ryan on guitar, and myself on keys and talk box. At first i was thinking that we were gonna have guitar wars with 2 guitars on stage, which is something rare for Gomega. Then as we began our first set i noticed it was actually blending. Not too sweet, not too rancid. Kanoa was able to concentrate more on his vocals while playing guitar and everything sounded natural and not forced. The stage vibe was solid. I haven’t felt that musical fullness on stage in a while and it felt reeeeally goood. It all was just really comfortable. We do our best at every show and Kanoa kills on bass, but just having that designated bass player and Kanoa being able to focus on vocals adds so much more to the sound.

Overall it was a great night for us. I hope to share the stage with Wolf man a lot more. Maybe even permanently??? Haha. We will see.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us! Also to the Fun House Crew (Joey, Will, Eric) who never miss a show, Brendan and Sarah, and to Life’s a beach. You guys and girls rock.

    Fo Sho!

    Cody M.
